Helium-3, a fusion-relevant isotope produced by the Sun, is carried outward by the solar wind and continuously bombards the Moon’s surface, which lacks a magnetic field or atmosphere. Meteorite impacts periodically stir the regolith, embedding helium-3 ions a short distance beneath the soil grains.
