18-year-old dies of measles in PA from severe neurological complication

Pennsylvania health officials confirmed four measles-related deaths, including an unvaccinated 18-year-old from Mifflin County and an unvaccinated 40-year-old woman. The teenager died from acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, a rare autoimmune disorder causing inflammation that strips protective nerve cell coverings. Two previous deaths involved infants in Lancaster County who were too young for vaccination.
