The 2026 El Niño Is Being ‘Supersized’ as Impacts Worsen

The World Meteorological Organization has issued its most certain forecast ever, predicting a nearly 100% likelihood that the 2026 El Niño will persist through February and will be the strongest on record. The event is already raising global temperatures by 0.1–0.2 °C, with 2027 expected to be even hotter, and is causing record-high U.S. summer temperatures, drought in Sudan and Puerto Rico, and disrupted eastern Pacific fisheries.
