Anthropic planned a $7bn takeover of chip startup MatX, then walked away

Anthropic negotiated a $7 billion acquisition of AI-chip startup MatX, founded in 2023 by former Google TPU engineers, before the talks stalled and shifted toward a partnership. MatX, which raised a $500 million Series B at a $4 billion valuation, targets large-language-model training chips and plans volume shipments from 2027. The abandoned deal reflects Anthropic’s rapid silicon buildup, including its own chip team and Samsung manufacturing talks, while keeping MatX independent for broader customer sales.
