Anthropic tests a new standard for Claude to work with factory and lab hardware

Anthropic’s Model Hardware Standard (MHS) is a research-preview file format that encodes a machine’s capabilities and safe operating limits, enabling AI models to control hardware directly. A Genentech scientist sent Claude a PDF experiment, which the assistant executed autonomously using an MHS file. Early adopters include AWS, Danaher, Hugging Face, and Raspberry Pi. The standard will align with Europe’s Machinery Regulation, effective 20 January 2027, which classifies AI-driven safety functions as regulated components.
