Apple’s new chief executive is a hardware engineer. His first lineup answers a software problem with a hinge.

John Ternus, Apple’s hardware engineer since 2001, headed the September 9 “Surprise and Shine” event, unveiling a foldable iPhone with a 7.6-inch inner display, a 5.5-inch cover screen, and a touch-screen MacBook. The lineup excludes entry-level iPhones, offering only Pro, Pro Max, and foldable models, shifting the strategy to an all-premium release schedule. Apple also announced a rebuilt Siri powered by a custom Google Gemini model and a 1.2-trillion-parameter AI system.
