Astronomers Detect a 10-Sided Structure in Saturn's Atmosphere
Astronomers led by Agustín Sánchez-Lavega identified a ten-sided atmospheric wave encircling Saturn’s south pole at about 60° latitude, moving roughly 10 km h−1 while riding an eastward jet that streams at ~420 km h−1. The decagon, confirmed by Hubble images and amateur observations, shows the same vertically layered structure as the long-standing north-pole hexagon but differs in side count, latitude and apparent robustness.
