Astronomers Have Completed the Largest Map of Space. Yes, You Can Play With It.

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) has produced the largest three-dimensional map of the universe, containing 5.6 trillion pixels and about 4 billion objects across roughly 75% of the sky in visible and near-infrared light. The new Legacy Imaging Surveys viewer lets anyone explore this data, while five-year observations—building on earlier work—have already supported 1,800 papers and revealed that dark energy may be weakening over time, with a full analysis slated for 2027.
