Australia passes law to charge tech companies levies unless they reach deals with news publishers

Australia’s new law requires Meta, Google, TikTok, LinkedIn and other tech firms generating over AU $250 million in local ad revenue to pay a 2.75% levy unless they secure agreements with at least eight Australian news outlets by the end of each reporting period. The levy funds publishers, with payouts tied to the number of journalists employed, replacing ineffective 2021 rules that previously led to temporary content blocks.
