Authors push back as publishers and agents seek share of Anthropic settlement

About 500,000 authors will receive $3,000 for each pirated work under Anthropic’s $1.5 billion settlement; payments are split 50-50 with publishers for in-print books, while self-published or rights-reverted titles go entirely to the author. Writers allege publishers and some agents claim excessive shares, citing outdated rights records and a rule requiring rights reversion before 10 August 2022. The Authors Guild is advising creators on how to challenge incorrect allocations.
