bzip3

bzip3 is a spiritual successor to bzip2 that achieves higher compression ratios and faster speeds by combining an order-0 context-mixing entropy coder, a suffix-array-based Burrows-Wheeler transform, and an LZP-plus-prediction pass. Benchmarks on a 262-file Perl archive show bzip3 compressing in 7 minutes (256-block, 12 threads) versus bzip2’s 17 minutes and xz’s 12 minutes, while decompression reaches up to 23 MiB/s per thread on x64 Linux clang13 builds.
