Comcast is turning tens of millions of routers into motion detectors

Comcast’s Xfinity Shield service adds “WiFi Motion,” which detects movement by monitoring signal changes between a gateway and stationary devices, sending alerts without using cameras. The feature is free for customers with compatible routers, offers three watch modes, and can be tuned for sensitivity and pet filtering. A paid tier adds AI-powered cameras, door/window sensors, cloud storage, and 24/7 emergency response, while the company’s policy allows sharing motion data with law-enforcement or under legal orders.
