The Trump administration used 19 U.S.C. §1509, a customs-import provision, to compel Google and T-Mobile to hand over six months of a Minneapolis journalist’s phone records and YouTube data without judicial approval. A judge had previously rejected similar warrants, and the summons required secrecy, prompting criticism from press-freedom advocates.
