Dinosaur-killing impact crater might have been teeming with life

The Chicxulub asteroid impact generated a hydrothermal system that persisted for 8 million years within the Yucatan Peninsula. Subterranean deformation reached 35 kilometers deep, melting rock and creating porous structures. This hot water environment provided a refuge for microorganisms in the deep ocean following the mass extinction event.
