Functional Ultrasound Imaging from Scratch

Functional ultrasound imaging (fUSI) records ≈100 μm resolution brain activity by detecting speckle changes from moving red blood cells during hemodynamic responses. It employs transducer arrays that transmit and receive 18 MHz ultrasound, reconstructing impedance variations without a magnet. fUSI achieves a ten-fold higher linear resolution than fMRI. The technique has been used intraoperatively and in a patient with an acoustically transparent cranial implant. Python tutorials are available for data analysis.
