Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says

The United Nations Environment Programme report states Earth will surpass the 1.5 °C warming limit within a few years, with the most optimistic pathway peaking at 1.8 °C by mid-century and current policies projecting 2.6 °C by 2100. The report proposes an “overshoot” strategy: after exceeding the threshold, aggressively phase out fossil fuels and deploy large-scale carbon-removal technologies to bring temperatures back below 1.5 °C by the end of the century.
