How Google Maps knows when a business is packed

Google Maps estimates real-time crowd levels by aggregating anonymous location data from users with the Maps Timeline feature, using device density and historical visit patterns to compute popular times, average visit durations, and wait times for venues. It shows metrics on graphs and “Busy area” charts, provides only relative busyness without revealing identities or exact headcounts, and excludes data from users who disable Timeline.
