How Hacker News ranking works: scoring, controversy, and penalties (2013)

Hacker News calculates story scores from upvotes, age, and gravity, causing rapid rise and decay. Only upvoted stories move immediately; every 30 seconds a random top-50 story is re-evaluated. Pages cache for 90 seconds. Penalties for controversy can remove high-scoring posts from the front page.
