How is Android Auto different from Android Automotive?

Android Auto runs on a driver’s Android phone and projects a simplified interface to the car’s screen for navigation, music and messaging, connecting via USB or wirelessly. Android Automotive OS is installed directly on the vehicle’s hardware, offering native infotainment, climate and EV controls, with optional Google-built-in services such as Maps and Assistant. Polestar 2 debuted Android Automotive in 2020, while other makers can combine AAOS with Android Auto or CarPlay.
