How Railroad Crossings Work
Trains require extensive safety infrastructure because their stopping distance can reach a mile, far exceeding human sight distance. At over 200,000 U.S. grade crossings, passive devices like crossbucks and stop signs coexist with active systems—flashing red lights, bells, and dropping gates—that detect a train via rail conductivity and give motorists time to stop. These combined visual and audible warnings enforce the train’s right-of-way and prevent collisions.
