How to change the background on iPhone Messages

iOS 26 adds customizable conversation backgrounds to the Messages app, letting users select animated wallpapers—Color, Sky, Water, Aurora—or a personal photo, with the same image shown to all participants. The feature requires iMessage (not SMS/RCS) and iPhone 15 Pro or later for AI-generated backgrounds, and can be disabled via the Conversation Background toggle in Settings.
