How to use your MacBook's built-in backup tool instead of paying for cloud storage

Apple’s Time Machine lets macOS users create local backups without paying for cloud services, storing apps, photos, videos and documents on an external drive or a partitioned internal disk. The utility requires a drive at least twice the size of the Mac’s internal storage, formatted to APFS, and can run hourly, daily or weekly snapshots that are restorable via Finder’s “Enter Time Machine” interface.
