IBM’s next-gen mainframe chip is the first to run Arm and Z workloads on the same cores

IBM unveiled a 2-nm mainframe processor with 11 cores that can switch between IBM Z and Arm instruction sets in nanoseconds, allowing Arm64 Linux VMs and traditional z/OS workloads to run side-by-side on the same silicon. The chip operates above 5.7 GHz, includes on-chip AI inference accelerators, a dedicated data-processing unit, and a large cache, and will scale to hundreds of cores and tens of terabytes of memory in future Z and LinuxONE systems.
