ICE Wants to Know Who Bought a Certain Green Beanie From REI in the Last 2 Years

HSI subpoenaed REI in March for the names of every Minneapolis-St. Paul customer who purchased a specific dark-green beanie since 2024, targeting a probe of 39 defendants tied to an ICE protest. The request was one of 92 “1509 customs summonses” issued to entities including social-media platforms, airlines, telecoms, a car-rental firm and a state employment agency, sparking criticism that the tool is being used for broad data collection beyond its customs-law purpose.
