It turns out that Orion's much-maligned heat shield performed really well

The Orion heat shield, despite losing large chunks during a 2022 test, was flown unchanged on Artemis II with a modified re-entry trajectory, and it successfully protected the crew during atmospheric entry. Commander Reid Wiseman and NASA officials confirmed the shield performed well after the Pacific splash-down.
