Largest known Roman mosaic, beneath Baths of Trajan, opens to the public

A ten-metre-high mosaic, the largest wall artwork found in the Roman world, and a fresco of a walled port city were uncovered beneath the Baths of Trajan on the Oppian Hill in the 1990s. The “Painted City” fresco and the “Muse and the Philosopher” mosaic date to 54–96 AD. They opened to the public on 12–13 September and will be on display Friday to Sunday from 2 October. The site is part of a new museum funded by a €500 million EU PNRR-Caput Mundi programme, confirmed by Rome’s mayor Roberto Gualtieri.
