Leaving DigitalOcean, one site at a time
DigitalOcean pledged $1 million annually for three years to the Omacom Foundation, the nonprofit behind DHH’s Omarchy. The author migrated personal sites—atmoBB, pollen.place, and others—off multiple DigitalOcean droplets and Fly machines to a single UpCloud server, an object-storage bucket, and a managed Postgres database. The move leveraged a custom Deploy tool built on Docker and Railway’s Railpack to automate Git-based deployments and simplify file persistence.
