Matrox: Graphics for Professionals

Lorne Trottier and Branko Matić founded Matrox in Dorval, Quebec, in 1976, launching the MTX-1632 video RAM that offered 512 bytes of 650 ns memory and 32×16 ASCII display for $198, quickly generating $20,000 in orders and profitability. Their subsequent MTX-2562 provided 256×256 raster graphics with DMA for $630, positioning Matrox as the only vendor offering high-resolution DMA displays under $1,000, and they showcased these products at the PC ’76 trade fair in August 1976.
