Meta and the states are talking settlement while the jury is still sitting

Meta is negotiating settlements with state attorneys general while a federal jury trial proceeds in Oakland, involving 29 states and four trial states—California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey—over alleged consumer-protection violations and COPPA breaches for collecting children’s data to train AI. The trial states seek roughly $200 billion in damages, and any settlement would require monetary compensation and changes to teen-account practices, as separate lawsuits, such as Tennessee’s case over Instagram’s addictive design, continue.
