Meta is testing Community Notes in Latin America. Fact checkers are worried.

Meta is piloting its crowd-sourced Community Notes program in 16 Latin American countries, onboarding approved contributors to add context to posts on Facebook, Instagram and Threads while keeping third-party fact-checking unchanged during the test. Meta signals that, once proven effective, it may replace existing fact-checking arrangements, prompting strong criticism from the International Fact-Checking Network and the Oversight Board, which warn the approach is insufficient for high-polarization environments such as Nicaragua, El Salvador and Venezuela.
