Meta pays Microsoft hundreds of millions a year to rent AI models

Meta spends hundreds of millions annually on Microsoft’s Foundry marketplace, running trillions of tokens each week through Azure to access external models—including OpenAI’s—for software development and to evaluate its own AI outputs. This makes Meta one of Microsoft’s largest AI customers, alongside ByteDance, despite owning its own data centers and frontier models.
