Meta Will Pay Up to $16.7 Billion to Settle Its Social Media Harms Case—and That’s Not All

Meta agreed to pay up to $16.7 billion to 51 U.S. states and territories and implement default product changes that limit teen usage on Instagram and Facebook, including a two-hour daily cap, night-time blocks, muted school-hour notifications, and disabled cosmetic-surgery filters. Approximately $12.7 billion is guaranteed, while the remaining amount depends on Snap, TikTok and YouTube adopting comparable safeguards such as one-hour limits and night mode.
