Microsoft Teams Has Become a Haven for Scammers in China

A romance scammer posing as a Microsoft researcher moved victims from Xiaohongshu to Microsoft Teams, gave them a shared account, and then persuaded them to invest in a cryptocurrency scheme, causing losses ranging from $1,500 to $300,000, including one victim’s $100,000 loss. Chinese authorities have warned that Teams is a “fraud-related app,” and Microsoft responded by adding a warning banner, ending the personal Teams version in China, and limiting the service to enterprise accounts.
