NASA and IBM made an AI model for exploring the Moon

NASA and IBM released the open-source NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model on Hugging Face, which outperforms the Microsoft-trained SwinV2-B vision system by 23% in ice-spot detection and 19% in crater classification while using half the training data. The model correctly identified the SpaceX Falcon 9 impact crater on its first try, and the accompanying dataset enables other researchers to develop lunar-focused AI tools.
