New Satellite Engine Could Use Earth's Atmosphere to Stay in Orbit Indefinitely
Francesco Romano’s research demonstrates a radio-frequency helicon plasma thruster that uses atmospheric molecules as fuel, enabling continuous thrust in Very Low Earth Orbit. In wind-tunnel tests the specular intake captured 94.3% of incoming particles, with only an 8% drop at a 15° tilt, and the thruster achieved 99% electrical-power efficiency. The system eliminates the need for onboard propellant and a neutralizer, addressing atomic-oxygen corrosion and variable atmospheric density challenges.
