New York bans AI in primary school, three months after Norway did

New York City will enforce a one-year moratorium on generative AI for students from pre-school through eighth grade, removing all student-facing AI tools and chatbots for roughly 600,000 children starting in the 2026-27 school year. High schools may run limited pilot programs for up to 50,000 pupils, while Norway’s similar ban applies to grades one-seven and the EU AI Act classifies education uses as high-risk but has not yet enforced related obligations.
