New York has more tech workers than San Francisco for the first time

In 2025 the New York metro area employed 394,300 tech workers, overtaking the San Francisco Bay Area’s 375,730. New York added 30,640 tech jobs from 2022-2025, while the Bay Area lost 23,900. The Bay Area holds 98,699 AI roles versus New York’s 67,949 and receives 80% of U.S. AI venture funding since 2020. AI-related postings now represent 31% of U.S. tech ads, with non-AI postings down 60% nationwide and 73% in the Bay Area.
