The next big thing in hydrogen could be underground

Naturally occurring hydrogen is being discovered in geological formations worldwide, with the US Midcontinent Rift identified as a prime prospect where iron-rich rock reacts with water to generate hydrogen; samples in Nebraska and Kansas show concentrations up to 96%. Companies such as HyTerra, Koloma, Vema Hydrogen and Eden GeoPower are testing extraction and stimulation techniques, aiming for commercial production by 2028.
