Octopus intelligence may be related to never-before-seen mutation
Researchers identified a unique ribosomal RNA split in shallow-water incirrate octopuses that enables ribosomes to synthesize proteins with roughly double the usual accuracy, a mutation absent in deep-sea cirrates and squids. The adaptation coincides with the lineage’s enlarged nervous systems and complex behaviors, suggesting a role in maintaining neuronal protein integrity.
