OpenAI denies that its researchers or models saw Buckmaster or Alpöge's prompts, says it spent millions in compute after hearing Anthropic had a breakthrough (Wired)
OpenAI stated that neither its researchers nor its models were exposed to the prompts used by mathematician Tristan Buckmaster and Anthropic researcher Levent Alpöge in their Navier-Stokes work, and that the company allocated millions of dollars in compute after learning of Anthropic’s breakthrough. Buckmaster claims OpenAI leveraged an internal model to solve the problem, drawing a parallel to Deep Blue’s 1997 victory over Garry Kasparov.
