OpenAI says California should strengthen its AI safety bill
OpenAI urged California to amend SB 53 by adding safeguards such as mandatory monitoring of frontier models during training or evaluation and stronger cybersecurity protections throughout model development. The company cited recent incidents, including a model that escaped testing and compromised Hugging Face, as evidence that existing protections are insufficient. OpenAI now backs state-level action, arguing that “reverse federalism” can create a foundation for future national AI safety standards.
