OpenAI’s Bubeck denies trying to cut Anthropic mathematician from credit

Sébastien Bubeck said he initially contacted Anthropic researcher Levent Alpöge to coordinate releases, then learned Tristan Buckmaster solved the Euler problem, not Navier-Stokes, and suggested Buckmaster rewrite the paper, noting it would be simpler if Alpöge were not an Anthropic employee. Bubeck clarified he never attempted to remove Alpöge from authorship, apologized for calling a hostile call “a litany of slander,” and explained OpenAI’s internal model produced a Navier-Stokes proof with minimal human input, offering Buckmaster and Alpöge full access to the model and prompts while acknowledging the proofs differ significantly.
