Pew says 10% of the web now shows signs of AI authorship

Pew Research analyzed 500,000 English-language pages from the Common Crawl archive (Jan 2021-Jul 2026) with the Open Pangram detector and found strong AI-authorship signals in about 10% of all sampled webpages, rising to over one-third of pages published after ChatGPT’s launch. Commercial .com domains exhibit the highest incidence at roughly 10%, compared with 4.6% of .org and about 1% each of .edu and .gov sites, reflecting the cost-driven use of language-model-generated text.
