Powering AI is an architecture problem

A July 2026 transmission fault in Ashburn, Virginia knocked out over 3 GW of AI-focused data center load, echoing a 2024 incident where a failed surge arrester shed 1,500 MW across 60 facilities. The article argues that traditional data-center power stacks—low-voltage UPS, bypass operation, and legacy protection logic—cannot handle AI’s rapid, gigawatt-scale load swings, and proposes moving to higher medium-voltage distribution, modular external enclosures, and continuous-path power conditioning to stabilize the grid.
