Putting mice into hibernation causes a major loss of synapses

Researchers induced a hibernation-like state in mice by activating hypothalamic Q neurons, which eliminated more than half of the animals’ synapses while preserving their learned memories. The experiment, described in Science, demonstrates that memory can endure despite extensive synaptic turnover.
