Random rewards enrich classic game-theory contests

Researchers introduced a mathematical model that adds evolving strategies and randomly varying payoffs to classic game-theory contests, allowing rewards to change over time. Applying the model to the prisoner’s dilemma shows that when the payoff for cooperation is outweighed by the incentive to defect, the equilibrium converges on universal betrayal, causing all participants to lose.
