The Raspberry Pi Interactive Timeline · 2006–2026
The Raspberry Pi originated as a Cambridge university prototype to boost computer-science interest, leading to the foundation’s charity registration in 2009. In 2012 it launched the $35 Model B with a 700 MHz ARM CPU, 256 MB RAM (later 512 MB) and Raspbian OS. Production shifted to Sony’s Welsh factory, and 1.75 million units sold in 18 months, half made in Wales. Subsequent releases included the $25 Model A, a 5-MP camera module, and a Compute Module for industrial applications.
