The reasons rugged laptops are rarely bought by consumers

Panasonic’s Toughbook 40, rated for 6-foot drops, IP66 dust-water protection and MIL-STD-810H compliance, weighs 7.5 lb and launched at $4,899, while comparable Getac and Dell rugged models range from 5.3 lb to nearly 8 lb. Their reinforced frames, sealed ports, glove-compatible displays and replaceable batteries target field-service, public-safety and military users, making them far heavier and costlier than consumer laptops that prioritize portability and performance.
