Reform UK wants to scrap the UK GDPR and copy New Zealand’s privacy law

Reform UK announced plans to repeal the UK GDPR and replace it with a lighter framework based on New Zealand’s 2020 Privacy Act, which caps fines at NZ$50,000 and lacks rights such as the “right to be forgotten.” The party argues the change will ease burdens on small businesses and preserve the UK’s EU data-adequacy status, despite criticism that diverging from EU standards could jeopardise that designation.
