Jimmy Lai, the 78-year-old Hong Kong media magnate, has been detained since December 2020, while 29-year-old activist Joshua Wong, who has spent a month longer in prison, was recently charged with urging Western sanctions and faces a potential life sentence after pleading guilty. The National Security Law that took effect on 30 June 2020 criminalises opposition, prompting fellow pro-democracy founder Nathan Law to seek asylum in Britain.
